All Need to Know about

Casement Windows

Casement windows are designed with a window attached to the frame with one or more hinges at either side. They can be used in pairs or singly in the same structure. The windows are hinged outside. A casement stay is used in holding the window open. It is apparent that casement windows can serve a broad range of house design needs. Casement windows are hinged from the outer side and opened inwards. A broad range of casement windows are typical in many homes.

The windows are opened with a crank, cam handle, and lever. The opening tools are located at the bottom or the height of a hand which makes an efficient lock for the window. It is key to have a stay or crank when the window is opened outwards to keep it in position despite the effect of wind. A rabbeted frame is utilized in fitting the windows. Casement windows are named in two ways; FCL and FCR. Where FCL is the left-handed window and the right-handed is FCR. FCL has the hinges on the left with the lock on the right. Right-handed on the other side have hinges on the right and the left; there is the lock.

The window design is commonly used for exterior designs. The window opens similar to a door and is hinged by the side. A casement window resembles a picture window as it lacks a rail. Typically, the window designs open by a simple push while many casement style windows use a crank.

Additionally, casement windows support mounting screens. The screens can be placed on the inside part of the window where they are safer. A casement window equipped with a crank is efficient when considering the installation of windows over a sink or any appliance.

It’s important to consider whether to buy impact or non-impact and vinyl or aluminum frames.  A casement window is only as good as the materials you choose.

Benefits & Features of

Casement Windows

Casement windows have many advantages that are often a huge benefit to homeowners when choosing replacement window styles.  The biggest benefit of casement windows is their opening size.  This window offers great ventilation due to the opening being larger than all the standard window designs and styles.  Casement windows are great for sharing your view.  The window is unobstructed by muntons, which you typically see on single and double hung windows.  The type of mechanism used to operate a casement window, as well as their air tight installation, makes these windows highly energy efficient and secure. These windows are versatile and there are many available combinations when it comes to style, trim, shape and finishing options.

Upgrading to the best

Impact Casement Windows

Impact casement windows are built to withstand harsh environmental conditions. These may include high strong winds, hurricanes or the blazing high temperatures in South Florida. Many companies are familiar with homeowners’ need for security and thus the production of impact casement windows has provided incredible security features. An ideal impact casement window should have the following qualities but not limited to; thick durable frames, high sill which prevents water intrusion, and PVB or SGP inner layers. It is key to remember that impact does not mean that the window can’t break, it just means that unlike non-impact windows that shatter glass all over, a casement impact window contains the glass inside of a laminate where little to no glass can shatter to the surrounding area causing injury. casement impact windows in South Florida are ideal because when a nasty storm (maybe a tropical storm or depression) is on its way, you no longer need to stress about shutters. When considering replacement windows, impact casement windows are a great investment for many years to come.

Affordability & Customization

Non-Impact Casement Windows

Non-impact casement windows share some of the many options of the impact single hung windows. They are engineered to meet the building code requirements where impact casement windows are not needed, however in impact areas, shutters are often required to meet code. Non-impact casement windows offer options for full protection from ultraviolet light, are low maintenance and have annealed glass coverings. The appearance and the affordability often attract homeowners to non-impact casement windows. They are engineered to meet or exceed demanding energy-saving requirements. The non-impact casement windows are also crafted with non-corrosive hardware like the impact casement windows. While non-impact casement windows are affordable, it is important to note that if you do not have shutters, the cost of replacement windows and shutters can often times be more expensive then the impact casement windows.  For more information before making your decision, call our professionals at 772-781-2383.

More About Vinyl or Aluminum Frames

Vinyl Casement Windows

As the name suggests, vinyl casement windows are made of what is commonly known as vinyl or uPVC material. Vinyl single hung windows offer good durability and stand up to the test of time. The maintenance of this type of window is very low and their cost in the market is averagely lower than that of aluminum casement windows. The vinyl frames have an approximate lifespan of about 50 years before they need be replaced. Vinyl casement windows also offer good thermal resistance and the frames often carry a lifetime warranty.  Ask to read, review and be sure to understand how your warranty works when purchasing your new windows.

Aluminum Casement Windows

Modern aluminum casement window frames are generally separated by a thermal break which is a glass fiber that is reinforced with polyamide. This thermal insulation ensemble significantly increases thermal resistance while conserving structural strength. The durability of an aluminum casement window is above average with very low maintenance and upfront costs. In addition, an aluminum impact casement window is said to have the most resilience against the storms of South Florida. The drawback to purchasing aluminum over vinyl framed windows is that the aluminum casement window offers a 3-year limited warranty versus the lifetime limited warranty of the vinyl frames. It is highly recommended that homeowners read, review and understand the warranty on all the windows we offer at GBW Windows.
